Jack Amos

a tribute by Ron Saunders to archivist and researcher Jack Amos

No man is an island, entire of itself.

0
Whoever you meet in the course of your life, no matter how fleeting, no matter how briefly, something of them remains within you, becomes part of you. Therefore, it follows that, as John Donne went on to say, ‘Any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved’.

Jack was a film researcher and, (as he was the first to proudly admit), an archivist for whom the images on the frames of film stored, logged and catalogued within film libraries, was a cache, a reservoir, an illuminating light on, not just our past but our present and our future.

As an archivist, Jack would not be content to let the catalogue do the work of the Library.  Film is a visual medium and, to him, that meant viewing the material, mining deeper into vaults to to see exactly what the vague card reference, ‘LONDON SCENES - 1930’s’ actually concealed. Never fully trusting the description of an item hastily described years ago, he would get immense satisfaction & pleasure from viewing the item &, using his knowledge of newsreels & 20th Century history, unearth the real value of of the moving images sealed within a can of film.

As a researcher, he had the same qualities, digging deeper, determined to get the very best to illustrate the topics, the arguments, the period, the aims of any production he worked on. The idea of pulling a compilation of commonplace shots for use was anathema to him. His aim was always to present his editor, director, producer with the visuals that  would open jaded eyes. Through Jack, many people in our industry came to realise that there was so much more to be discovered, to draw upon, so much more than they had initially thought to look for within the treasury of various collections of moving images.

And so it follows, no matter who we are, if we are concerned with producing programmes that make sense of our past, our present, our future; all of us, and an industry, have been diminished by Jack’s passing. Whether you knew him or not, we are all involved in the loss of a truly exceptional person.

Creative Pro: An Intimate Look at Adobe's Branding

When I was down at Adobe a few weeks back, I wrote about the graphics used in the launch of Creative Suite 6.

It turns out I'm not the only one interested in the graphic treatments for not only the marketing of CS6, but also in the products themselves. While the periodic table-style icons are essentially the same as the last few versions, the splash screens of the applications are markedly different.

Apparently many of you aren't thrilled with the applications' new looks.

Digital Media: Content Insider 228 - NAB Wrap Deux

The Nvidia GPU Conference gave us yet another peek into why the GPU still matters. Jen-Hsun Huang runs a high tempo aggressive team that is always pushing the envelope and his latest announcement was no exception bringing tears to our son's eyes because he so wanted one of the $1K units but no way! It may be all about gaming power but the pixel processing power took us right back to NAB and how their latest offerings and technology announcements is keeping pace with movie and broadcast producers demands for better quality video and faster encoding. And yes you still have to store it all somewhere!

Creative Pro: Fonts on Friday: Influenced by the '70s

What better time to round up new typefaces than on Friday. Not only is "Fonts on Friday" alliterative, but showcasing new fonts also seems like a good way to end the week.

The fonts featured in this week's installment have a decidedly '70s vibe. The type and lettering of the '70s often had a look and feel that today we might associate with the social change that started in the '60s. Think of the revival of Cooper Black, a chunky face that looks like it had just been liberated from its girdle.

While Edge is still very much in development, Muse is now available for purchase.

Muse is a Website-creation tool with a WYSIWYG interface and the process used is much like Adobe InDesign.

Creative Pro: Adobe Will Fix Security Holes in CS5.5 Apps

Adobe found itself in hot water last week when it announced its plan to help users overcome a security flaw in key Creative Suite 5.5 applications. The solution? Upgrade to CS6.

The applications affected — Flash Professional, Illustrator, and Photoshop — have security holes that let hackers take control of your system after you open a malicious file, for example, a .TIF file in Photoshop. Versions 5.5 and earlier on both Mac and Windows are vulnerable.
