New marketplace opens for business

Cutcaster started up by John Griffin is aiming to establish a new form of commerce in stills and video

Cutcaster is a new portal, a community-based content marketplace, that is establishing a new way to find, buy, sell and negotiate prices for both digital stills and stock footage online. At its beta test site, Cutcaster facilitates buyers bidding on content, negotiating pricing directly with sellers and gives sellers the scale prices.

The New York-based company is headed up by John Griffin who describes the operation as "not micro-stock, mid-stock or Getty Images, but an exchange that combines all three based on quality, pricing and user experience."

SADiE finds new life with Prism

Manufacturer of interfaces and converters for the sound side of recording and broadcast markets, Cambridge, UK-based Prism Sound buys SADiE, Studio Audio and Video Ltd.

The SADiE brand is highly regarded in the pro audio and broadcast industries for the quality of its PC-based digital audio workstation products but it went into administration in February. Prism Sound is known for its high end A/D and D/A converters for mastering, tracking and post production. Prism Sound directors Graham Boswell and Ian Dennis negotiated the deal when they heard about the demise of SADiE. Both companies shared a strong R&D and engineering approach with strong brand recognition throughout the broadcast and pro audio industries.

"Along with many people in the industry, we were very saddened to hear that SADiE had run into problems," says Graham Boswell. "The company's reputation for innovation and creativity is truly remarkable and its digital audio workstations are rightly considered to be the best in the world. SADiE has always insisted on the highest standards of engineering and this is reflected in the quality of its product range and the tremendous loyalty of its customers." Boswell says: "By combining two complementary product ranges with overlapping customer bases, we are confident that we can create a formidable and highly competitive business for the future."

Prism Sound has sales offices in Cambridge, UK and New Jersey, USA.   Dennis says: “Looking further into the future, we have the financial and engineering resources to aggressively develop new products and ensure that they are effectively promoted to broadcast and pro audio customers. We will be keen to combine the Prism Sound "Sound" with the supreme reliability and ease of use of the SADiE editing and production software."

Tributes have been paid to Julia Martin, AP Archive's US-based business development manager, who died recently after a short illness aged 36. Her current and former co-workers from ITN and the AP as well as family recently attended a memorial service at AP in New York. British born, Julia had worked for ITN for eight years, relocating to New York in 2000 where she spearheaded ITN Source's expansion in North America, then in July 2007, she joined AP Archive's New York office where she was developing relationships with customers throughout North America. She was recently voted in as treasurer of US footage trade association ACSIL.

Friends and colleagues of Julia Martin, were devastated to learn of her death on April 2nd 2008. Her death at the age of 36 came after she had contracted double pneumonia; she had been on complete life support for many days but succumbed despite medical efforts. Modern Feed offers a menu

Modern Feed video search engine and aggregator unveils new approach to finding video online

Modern Feed is a new service to help users navigate the ever more densely populated domain of online video. Part search engine, part aggregator, it is focusing on indexing professionally-produced programming, not user-generated video - and complete programming rather than clips.

modern feed logo

J.D. Heilprin, Modern Feed's founder/CEO describes the company’s aim as targeting mainstream users with an easy way to find available, high-quality video. A team of "feeders" choose the best videos to include on the site creating an index currently of 550 networks and 25,000 pieces of content. A networks can range from the traditional broadcaster to indie new entrants such as the Architectural Digest. This is played from the source's site (sometimes with a Modern Feed navigation frame at the top of the screen). It also offers an iPhone implementation with other devices to follow. This is an area where user behaviour has not revealed any clear pattern yet and rival video search engines such as Truveo, ClipBlast, blinkx, Veveo compete with portals like AOL, Yahoo and MSN, with navigation sites like TV Guide and the recently-launched PrimeTime Rewind. This is before you count the networks' own sites (and syndication efforts) that offer users the chance to track down content. Behind all this of course, is YouTube, the first stop for many users when it comes to video and one that is rapidly moving upmarket through partnerships with premium providers. (See C-span item below).

Modern Feed is looking to supply a strong user experience for mainstream users with advanced device integration to differentiate itself.

IBS: The London Loudness Summit 2011

Graham Heath MIPS reports on a specialist one-day summit held in London in December 2011

So what is all this loudness malarkey about? As a TV Sound Supervisor I try to tickle PPM6s on the meters and, hopefully, make a decent enough balance that'll earn me my next crust. However, I'm constantly frustrated by the 'loudness' of network junctions, adverts, and even VT packages that are often unheard until the dress run (if you're lucky enough to get a dress!), and sometimes not even then.
